Mini Police

Meet the latest Year 5 recruits from Castletown Primary School. They have swapped their school jumpers for hi-vis vests to support policing across the North East as part of Northumbria Police's Mini Police initiative.

Children from schools across Sunderland, South Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and Northumberland take part in the scheme – all pledging to give up their spare time to support operational policing.

The enthusiastic 9 and 10-year-olds will take on a crucial role in our community, undertaking everything from passing on personal safety tips to their peers to helping officers at public events.

Sunderland Runs

Our mini police officers did a brilliant job helping the organisers at the Sunderland Runs 3km, 10km and half marathon races. They helped to set up the stands with gift bags for all the runners and handed out medals to those taking part. They also had a chat with the mayor.

The children were amazing ambassadors for the school and we’re incredibly proud of them for their hard work and excellent conduct.

Visit to Northumbria Police's Marine Unit

The Marine Unit in Jarrow covers the North East coastline from Berwick to Seaham and across to Kielder. It can also be called upon by police forces across the country due to their specialist skills. Our Mini Police officers visited the site on the banks of the River Tyne to see the operation. They had a fantastic and informative visit - seeing the range of boats, vehicles and specialist equipment, such as the decompression tank.

Remembrance Sunday

Our Mini Police attended their first ever event at the Sunderland Remembrance Day service. They observed police duties and also took part in the two-minute silence.
